Dear Business Leader:

A project that I have had the pleasure of working on this past year is a program titled “School Counts”. This is done in cooperation with the Business Coalition for Educational Excellence at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce along with local school districts and the New Jersey Department of Education. I’d like to give you a little background on the program.

The belief that drives the program is that young people need to know that there is a correlation between working hard in school and finding a job – whether that job is in a Fortune 500 company or in the stockroom of a local retail store. They need to know that attendance, punctuality, attitude and effort count, and nothing succeeds like hard work. School Counts will help students understand that school performance is important and will help develop a more highly-qualified workforce. The initiative encourages employers to use high school performance records as one of the criteria in evaluating job applications. Students will be provided with a certificate for each year in high school that they are enrolled in the program and they:

  • Obtain a grade of “C” or better in every course.
  • Achieve a 95% attendance and punctuality record
  • Complete high school in 8 consecutive semesters
  • Take more than the minimum graduation requirements.

What can you do? Following this letter is a Registration Form. Please complete the form and return it the Chamber Office today. I will see that your company is registered. You will receive a decal to place in the window of your business indicating that you will use the School Counts certificate as one of the criteria to evaluate job applicants. You will be identified in the School Counts web site as an employer who considers this program important.

In areas of the country where similar programs have been in existence for a number of years tangible results have been noted. There is no cost to you and only benefits to be gained for all of us.

I hope that you will support this program and send in your registration today. My goal is that every time a student in Brick walks into any business they see the School Counts decal and the message is loud and clear – what they do in High School matters!

Thank you for your support!
Sharon Pastras
President
